Joint Youth Enquiry Service + Oasis Youth Centre project:
‘Youth Radio’ - Restricted Service License broadcast ( RSL )
Do ya wanna? | Based on a 21 day broadcast period with an additional 2 day test broadcast period, the initiative aims to provide an exciting project for young people aged 12-25 to develop and run their own radio station. The project will provide specialist training for young people to undertake both the technical support necessary and the programming and delivery of the station which will also develop their personal, social and emotional competences including team working, communicating, problem solving. The broadcasts will encompass the opportunity for the young people to program shows which will use innovative, creative and attractive methods to reach other young people. Program slots will promote health and wellbeing; provide information and support; undertake research and needs assessment work; advertise opportunities open to young people including training/employment opportunities; promote volunteering and events; and provide an opportunity for relevant partners to work with participants and reach out to other young people.
The RSL (Restricted Service License) allows transmission over a 3-4 mile radius (25 watts on FM) and the intention would also be to offer 'selected' output through websites which gives the project options to reach a significant number of young people. Apart from the outcomes that this provides for young people, the wider community will also benefit as similar youth radio stations have proved that their projects have had a significant impact in helping to regenerate the business, social and cultural life of their area. |
