Projects

Dumfries YES and its volunteers run and/or support a cross section of new and on-going projects, which reflect local interests and needs. The main established projects are YES Events (now in its 10th year), Trash Music (7th year) and Phoenix LGBT Youth (5th year) see link. New projects develop from issues raised within these initiatives, or through the support group programme, other issues-based work or from ideas or needs expressed by individual young people.

Examples:

Rootz - a Celebration of Cultures
YES and YES Events have organised four Rootz events in recent years. The project was developed in direct response to concerns expressed by a group of young people about racial attacks reported in the local press. Rootz aims to promote cultural understanding and combat racism through a celebration of different types of music, art and dance from around the world.

Workshops for young people culminate in a full day festival which provides them with an opportunity to present their new talents on stage alongside professional performers. Highlights have included stunning musical performances from Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone, Trash Music, Egyptian belly-dancing, Zulu war dances, Celtic art workshops, break-dancing, henna ink tattooing and arts and crafts stalls.

All Rootz events were organised by YES volunteers / YES Events and supported by the Commission for Racial Equality, with funding from Awards for All, Youth Strategy Executive Group and Gaelforce. Every event was very well received, generating excellent feedback from performers and participants.

Trash Drumming (link to trash page)
Trash Drumming is an ongoing project, originally started by the YES in 1998. It has proved to be one of the service’s most enduring and popular activities. Trash music is a form of music and performance which utilises junk materials.
