Volunteer Programme Background The current volunteer programme was made possible by external monies through Quality of Life funding from the Scottish Executive. Previously the programme was ad hoc and based around summer activities.
Over the past two years, Quality of Life funding has allowed the YES to formulate a more structured, continuous volunteer provision. With the support and training opportunities now available, young people can design and deliver their own projects. As they grow in skills, experience and self-confidence, they are able to develop personal, social, emotional and educational competencies which enable them to become active citizens, improving the quality of life for themselves and others.
The programme offers young people the chance to:
- meet new and interesting people
- build self esteem and confidence
- access training and new opportunities and gain a broader perspective on life
- gain new skills and qualifications
- have a voice which is heard within the local and national community
- work towards accreditation and to gain recognition for their achievements through Youth Achievement Awards, certificates, awards ceremonies etc
- deliver peer education sessions to help, inform, support, inspire and involve other young people
participate in consultations.
YES volunteers worked in partnership with staff from YES and LGBT Youth Scotland, and with assistance from Volunteer Action and Fast Forward, to create a Volunteers’ Charter which defines the roles, rights and responsibilities of volunteers and the support and opportunities available to them through the YES. Volunteers have created job descriptions, a person specification and a Volunteers Handbook including policies and procedures for those wishing to engage with the volunteer programme. They are working towards gaining an Investing in Volunteers Standard through Volunteer Development Scotland. |
